A waveguide element is capable of realizing acute waveguide discontinuity, such as a right angle bending, (L-shaped bending) or branching (T-shaped branching). Two single mode waveguides having the identical cross-sectional structure form a waveguide discontinuity where center axes thereof extending in the longitudinal direction intersect with each other at an angle .theta. (0<.theta. ~ 90°). A leaky wave propagation region in a form of a lozenge shape having a length of one edge of L is located in the vicinity of a point where the center axes extended in the longitudinal directions of respective incident side and side single mode waveguides, with an effective propagation wavelength of a dominant mode there of to be cos (.theta./2) times of an effective propagation wavelength .lambda.G. Thus, an energy of the wave launched from an incident end of the single mode waveguide can be efficiently taken out from a end of the single mode waveguide.

L'invention est un élément de guide d'ondes capable de produire une discontinuité prononcée, telle qu'une déviation à angle droit (déviation en L) ou un branchement (branchement en T). Deux guides d'ondes monomode de même forme et de même section forment une discontinuité à l'endroit où leurs axes longitudinaux centraux se rencontrent à un angle (0° < 90°). Une région de propagation d'ondes de fuite en forme de losange de côté L est créée au voisinage du point de rencontre des prolongements des axes centraux dans les directions longitudinales du guide d'ondes incidentes et du guide d'ondes monomode; la longueur d'onde de propagation équivalente du mode dominant y est égale au produit de cos ( /2) par la longueur d'onde de propagation équivalente G. Ainsi, l'énergie de l'onde émise par l'extrémité d'incidence du guide d'ondes monomode peut être extraite efficacement à l'autre extrémité de ce guide d'ondes.
