- 8 - ABSTRACT WAVELENGTH TUNABLE TE TO TM OPTICAL MODE CONVERTER A wavelength tunable TE to TM optical mode converter is provided in which the electric fields for mode conversion and wavelength tuning are confined to nonoverlapping regions (106,107) of a birefringent waveguide (101). The levels of the supply voltages which must be provided to create the fields is thereby reduced. Several electrode configurations for providing this spatial separation are disclosed.
