A pulse sequence and method for MR imaging avoids aliasing by wavelet encoding and provides fast image acquisition with low FOV images. The pulse sequence provides for slice selection and encoding with fast and slow modulated pulses emitted by a RF coil during a set of 3 or more subpulses. Phase encoding is avoided. Wavelet encoding and frequency encoding are used with slice selection. Advantageously a higher SNR is obtained at higher resolution by increasing a flip angle of a 2D RF pulse at no penalty to imaging rate.
