A pad (10; 40; 64; 82; 94; 130; 140; 150) for supporting a portion of the human body is made of two substantially non-stretchable or non-elastic layers (12; 14; 44; 46; 62; 63; 141; 142; 151; 152) that are joined together along a peripheral edge (16; 42; 65; 96) and then are joined together in local regions (18; 20A-20C; 67) to form individual capsules (24A-24F; 48A-48F; 49A-49F; 68A- 68F; 70A-70F; 82A-82F; 84A-84F; 86A-86F; 88A-88F) in the pad (10; 40; 64; 82; 94; 130; 140; 150). The layers (12; 14; 44; 46; 62; 63) are "quilted" in the areas defined by the capsules (24A-24F; 48A-48F; 49A-49F; 68A-68F; 70A-70F; 82A-82F; 84A-84F; 86A-86F; 88A-88F) to control where and how much the pad can bulge. The pad (10; 40; 64; 82; 94; 130; 140; 150) is filled with a wax material that is plastic but does not flow readily. By repeated applications of loads the wax (21; 126) will flow or migrate slowly to change the configuration of the wax (21; 126) to conform to and support the surface contacting the pad (10; 40; 64; 82; 94; 130; 140; 150).
