ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of making a wear-resistant slab which com- prises the steps of rapidly quenching austenitic molten cast iron by contacting the molten cast iron with water to produce martensite granules of extremely high hardness, and embedding the granules in a slab-forming body of material selected from the group consisting of synthetic resin and rubber having a lower specific weight than the granules, with the granules concentrated at the upper face of the slab, or portions of the slab being substantially free of the granules. The re- sulting slab thus produced uses less amounts of the expensive wear-resistant material, and at the same time is lighter than prior art slabs and easier to manufacture.
