A vacuum conveyor for transporting a web, including a lead strip of a paper web, from the dryer of a paper-making machine to the first nip of a calender of the machine or between any other sections of a paper-making machine or paper-finishing machine has an elongate body, and an air- pervious endless vacuum belt movably mounted on first and second pulleys positioned at each end of the body and having a conveying run travelling from the first pulley adjacent one structure to the second pulley adjacent the other structure. A nose shoe is disposed beyond the second pulley and spaced slightly from the second pulley to define an opening between the shoe and the second pulley where the web leaves belt with an air slot disposed in the nose shoes adjacent the second pulleys to direct an air jet into the opening in a direction contrary to the rotation of the second pulley sufficient to lift the web from the belt. A guiding tray is arranged beyond the nose shoe having an upstream section disposed adjacent the nose shoe with an air slot provided across the web for emitting an air curtain flowing along the surface of the guiding tray.
