Abstract of the Disclosure A web transporting device in a rotary printing press includes a rotatably driven transport roller having a fixed axis, an engageable transport roller having an axis substantially parallel to the fixed axis and being engageable with the driven transport roller; the axis of the driven transport roller and the engageable transport roller extending substan- tially perpendicularly to a transport direction of a web displaceable through a nip between the driven and the engageable transport rollers, and having a length correspond- ing to a maximum width of the web processable in the press; an actuating device for applying a variable force to the engageable transport roller so as to vary a force of engage- ment of the engageable transport roller with the driven transport roller; and a damping device operative, in parallel with the actuating devices upon the engageable transport roller for damping impacts occurring in the nip.
