ABSTRACT A high-speed winder for web materials such as sheets of paper includes a web separator. The web separator comprises a pair of rotating rolls, one of which has a recess therein, and the other of which carries a rigid member to force the web into the recess and separate the paper. A very soft compressible member lies on each side of the rigid separator, and portions thereof hold the web tightly against the first roll, on each side of the recess, to prevent the web from being drawn into the recess by the separator. The leading one of the pair of resilient members is shorter than the trailing member of the pair, so as to pass over the web until such time as the separator is pressed against the web directly over the recess. Thereupon both of the soft compressible members are pressed against the web and hold the web against movement while the separator member pushes the web into the recess. The web separator of the present invention permits accurate separation of lightweight paper webs at speeds in excess of 1,000 meters per minute.
