ABSTRACT A weft insertion apparatus for flat weaving power looms includes a gripper shuttle dragged by a carriage guided above and a carriage guided below the shed by per- manent magnets provided in the gripper shuttle and in the carriages. The carriages are connected to a stepping motor, a speed-controlled three-phase current motor or a disk rotor motor by way of a cable, a belt or the like. Positioning of the carriages and thus of the gripper shuttle at the weft transfer points is effected by the holding force of the stepping motor, three-phase current motor, or disk rotor motor. By this weft insertion apparatus the number of cycles can be increased, especially on very wide flat weaving power looms.
