A B S T R A C T This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for weighing and sorting articles according to their mass or a mass to physical characteristic ratio with the method including the steps of causing the articles to move at a known constant velocity, measuring the momentum of the articles and computing the momentum of each article with its known velocity to determine its mass and sorting the articles into fractions above and below a predetermined mass. Preferably, a characteristic such as the radio activity of the articles is measured and the articles are sorted into fractions above and below a predetermined mass to characteristic level. The apparatus includes a conveyor which drops the articles onto a movable member, means for measuring the movement of the member when impacted, means for computing the movement of the member against the known velocity and means for measuring the radio activity of the articles in their flight path from the conveyor to the movable member.
