A weight distributing hitch assembly includes a hitch bar for mounting to a towing vehicle and a ball mount head carried on the hitch bar at a selected tilt angle. Additionally, the hitch assembly includes a pair of spring bars each having a proximal end for mounting on the ball mount head and a distal end for attaching to a trailer. A set of mounting apertures with projecting retention tabs are provided on the ball mount head and cooperating retaining groove and keyway structures are provided on the spring bars. These function to secure the spring bars and ball mount head together. A method for retaining a spring bar in a ball mount head is also disclosed.
