A weight distributing trailer hitch assembly for distributing the weight of the trailer relative to a tow vehicle with a shank assembly mounted to the tow vehicle and spring bars having a trunnion with an upper pivot member inserted into and enclosed by an upper pocket in a hitch head and a lower pivot member inserted through a forward facing access slot into a lower U-shaped pocket in the hitch head. The spring bars are inserted into the hitch head by orienting the spring bar perpendicular to the side of the hitch head, turning the spring bar sideways, inserting the upper pivot member into the upper hitch head pocket while sliding the lower pivot member through the forward facing access slot into the lower U-shaped hitch head pocket and then pivoting the free end of the spring bar toward a generally rearward facing operating position.
