An aircraft fuselage includes a tubular shell having a centerline axis, opposite ends, and a cross-section having a radius R(~), where ~ is the angular coordinate of a cylindrical coordinate system, a curvature Curv(~), where Curv(~) is the inverse of a local radius of curvature of a surface of the shell, and a circumferential shape that varies radially by no more than ~ 7% from that of an elliptical cross-section at substantially every station along the centerline axis between the nose and tail ends thereof. The weight of the shell is minimized by "tailoring," i.e., optimizing, at least one structural attribute, expressed as a function of ~, associated with every element of the shell, such that the weight of the shell required to react a design load incident thereon is less than that required to react the same design load, but wherein the same structural attribute has not been so tailored.

Cette invention concerne un fuselage d'aéronef comprenant une coque tubulaire présentant un axe médian, des extrémités opposées et une section transversale de rayon R(~), ~ désignant la coordonnée angulaire d'un système de coordonnées cylindriques, une courbure Curv(~), Curv(~) désignant l'inverse d'un rayon de courbure local d'une surface de la coque et une forme circonférentielle variant radialement d'au plus ± 7% par rapport à celle d'une section transversale elliptique à substantiellement chaque station le long de l'axe médian entre l'extrémité nez et l'extrémité queue de la coque. Le poids de la coque est réduit au minimum par "adaptation", autrement dit par optimisation, d'au moins un attribut structurel, exprimé en fonction de ~, associé à chaque élément de la coque, de façon que le poids de la coque requis pour quelle puisse réagir à une charge de calcul appliquée sur celle-ci soit inférieur à celui requis pour qu'elle puisse réagir à la même charge de calcul sans adaptation cette fois de ce même attribut structurel.
