A weightlifting machine is described which includes an elongate support frame having a first end and a second end. Weight guides extend between the first end and the second end of the elongate support frame. A plurality of weights are mounted on the elongate support frame for movement along the weight guides between the first end and the second end of the elongate support frame. The weights have axially aligned apertures positioned substantially at the balance point for each weight. A drive assembly is provided that includes a continuous loop drive linkage extending between the first end and the second end of the elongate support frame. The continuous loop drive linkage passes through the aligned apertures in the weights. A working member is secured to the continuous loop drive linkage. A person exerts a force upon the working member to cause movement of the continuous loop drive linkage. A pin is used to secure a selected number of weights to the continuous loop drive linkage thereby controlling the amount of resistance to movement of the continuous loop drive linkage when a force is applied to the working member.
