A B S T R A C T In a method of repairing welded pipe sections of large diameter pipe, there is described an improved method of welding which enables welding re- pairs to annular pipe welds to be performed without the necessity of removing whole sections of pipe from the bed. In this invention, a defective pipe weld is perforated and enlarged to assume a generally conically tapered configuration. An electrode is passed at least partially through this perforation and is insulated from the pipe by means of a conical insulator. A current source is connected to the external end of the electrode and welding equipment is connected to the inner end of the electrode thereby enabling in situ welding repairs to be performed.
