ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a method of welding pipe and pipe components which is particularly useful in welding of large diameter pipe for use in the distribution of natural gas. The invention is also directed to the specific welds used to join such components. The method uses the combination of a metal inert gas (MIG) process to initially form a root between the components, followed by a number of welds using a submerged arc welder to finish the weld. This weld satisfies the various ASME requirements and the method is efficient and cost effective.
