A dam (270) is provided for localizing gas around an outer periphery of an impeller (220). In one embodiment, by way of example only, the dam (270) includes a skirt (275), a flange (280), and a fastener (283). The skirt (275) includes an inner section (305), an outer section (310), and an outer peripheral edge (315). The inner section (305) is configured to be placed under the impeller (220), and the outer section (310) extends radially outwardly of the impeller outer periphery to the skirt outer peripheral edge (315). The flange (280) extends substantially perpendicular from the skirt outer peripheral edge (315). The fastener (283) is coupled to the skirt (275) and configured to couple the dam (270) to the impeller (220).
