ABSTRACT Apparatus for making a surface measurement of well casing external corrosion current including a voltmeter, a variable current source, a reference electrode, and a ground electrode. Current is coupled to the well casing to ground circuit by means of the ground electrode to cause a preselected small, less than 0.02 volt, poten- tial change in the well casing relative to the reference electrode. The voltmeter is used to measure the applied current level which is, for a fixed casing potential change, proportional to well casing corrosion current.
