A light actuated system for use in a wellbore, comprises a light actuated transducer in the wellbore. The light actuated transducer is adapted to transform a physical state of a component thereof upon application of optical energy. An optical waveguide conveys the optical energy from a source thereof to the light actuated transducer. A control device in the wellbore is operated at least in part by the change in the physical state of the component of the light actuated transducer.
