A wheel retainer includes a body to be secured to the hub of a vehicle and extend radially to overlie a portion of the wheel disc. The outer edge of the retainer lies adjacent the wheel disc to inhibit lateral movement relative to the hub. A sensor is incorporated into the retainer to indicate detachment of the wheel from the hub.
