- 21 - 4190-005 BERESKIN & PARR C A N A D A Title: WHEELCHAIR Inventor: NELSON W.H. PANG ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE According to the invention there is provided a wheel chair comprising a wheeled base unit and a seat assembly supported on the base unit and including a seat and back, at least one of which has, at outer sides thereof, a pair of respective side members, each comprising an extrusion having a plurality of undercut grooves, the grooves extending longitudinally of the respective side members and opening outwardly to the sides of the respective seat or back for permitting fittings and other components to be adjustably secured to the seat or back. In a preferred embodiment, a low-shear reclining seat assembly is ued. A lower region of the seat back includes a series of transverse cushioning ribs carried by an endless belt that can move up or down the back. When the back is reclined with a patient leaning on the cushion ribs, the belt allows the ribs to move down and accommodate differential movement between the seat back and the patient that would otherwise cause "shear" disruptions of the patient's skin. A sliding cushion at the top of the seat back is coupled to the endless belt to move with the belt and maintain continuity of patient support during recline and return movements of the seat back.
