People confined to wheelchairs temporarily or permanently have little opportunity to exercise their muscles due to limited use of their bodies. Existing apparatus that wheelchair bound individuals can use to exercise are expensive, cumbersome to use, and often require another person for assistance. In hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation clinics, where hundreds of patients may be confined to wheelchairs and beds for extended periods of time, the lack of resources available to assist such patients in exercise results in many of them remaining inactive and thus losing much physical capability. This prolonged inactivity may cause significant loss of muscle mass and tone. As well, their cardio-pulmonary capability can decrease from lack of exercise. In general, a lack of physical activity can cause patients confined to wheelchairs to be prone to suffer a deterioration in their mental and physical health, and can also lead to a prolonged recovery time for those who temporarily require a wheelchair. Therefore, there clearly exists a need for a cheap and easy to use tool for exercise that wheelchair bound individuals can independently use. This invention, called The Wheelchair for Exercise, enables infirmed individuals to use the wheelchair itself, or a frame in which the wheelchair can be placed, to exercise a variety of muscles throughout the entire body. By promoting exercise, the general health of the infirmed individual can be improved and their recovery period shortened. As well, able-bodied individuals can use a different version of the same invention.
