A propulsion system for a wheelchair, includes at least one crank arm movable in a reciprocating fashion in an arc by a user of a wheelchair. At least one bidirectional gear set is operatively connected to said at least one crank arm, for translating reciprocal motion of the crank arm into unidirectional rotation of the drive shaft. Transmission means are provided for selectively transmitting the rotation of the drive shaft to the wheels of the wheelchair.
