A wheelchair system is provided for use with a conventional mini-van including a wheelchair which has a seating reference point arranged to lie substantially in a common plane with the same seating reference points of the other occupant seats of the mini-van. The person in the wheelchair is thus able to sit upright in the mini-van with sufficient headroom with substantially no structural modification to the mini-van being required. This is accomplished by positioning the seat of the wheelchair to be inclined downward toward the rear of the seat, similarly to passenger seats in conventional passenger vehicles. An actuator supports the seat on a frame of the wheelchair for selectively raising or lowering the seat. This permits the seat to be raised for sitting at a table for example. A portable ramp arrangement is further provided for use in loading the wheelchair into a passenger vehicle.
