Method for producing discontinuous silicon carbide fibers, useful as heating elements in a low-energy microwave field, from discontinuous carbonized cotton fibers employing an admixture of carbonized cotton fibers, a metal salt promoter, calcium oxalate monohydrate, and low-density silicon dioxide. The admixture, in a dry state, is introduced into a preheated oven at about 1450 to 1750 degrees C for between about one and five hours. Silicon carbide fibers and a sheet formed from the fibers are disclosed.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour produire des fibres discontinues de carbure de silicium, servant d'éléments de chauffage dans un champ de micro-onde de basse énergie, à partir de filaments discontinus de coton carbonisé. Selon ce procédé, des filaments de coton carbonisé, un promoteur de sel métallique, de l'oxalate de calcium monohydraté et un dioxyde de silicium de faible densité forment un mélange qui, à l'état sec, est introduit dans un four préchauffé à environ 1450 - 1750 ·C pendant environ une à cinq heures. La présente invention porte également sur des fibres de carbure de silicium et sur des feuilles réalisées avec ces fibres.
