Abstract of the Disclosure A reflective mode liquid crystal display having a wide viewing angle and producing a display having sharp peripheral image definition. "Ghost" images or secondary reflections are substantially eliminated by positioning the liquid crystal proximate to the reflecting surface. The close positioning between the liquid crystal element and the reflective surface is obtained by placing a predetermined pattern of transparent electrodes on one side of a light polar- izer coterminous with the liquid crystal and placing a reflective surface on the other side of the light polar- izer. In this fashion the spacing between the liquid crystal and the reflective surface is limited only by the thickness of the polarizer. Moreover, since the light polarizer serves as a substrate for mounting the transparent electrodes, a supporting substrate for the light polarizer, if necessary, may be placed on the side of the reflective surface opposite the side adjacent the light polarizer. In this position t,he supporting sub- strate is seen to be removed from the optical path, and may therefore be of any structurally sufficient material including opaque materials.
