ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A winch system for paying out and retrieving line. The winch system includes a spooling unit, traction unit, and automatic level wind. The automatic level wind allows the location of the spooling unit and traction unit to be varied with respect to each other. The spooling unit, traction unit, and automatic level wind can thus be arranged to avoid reverse bends in the line even though the winch system is packaged as a single compact unit. The automatic level wind linearly recipro- cates the point at which line is direct on or off the spooling unit.
