A wind turbine has a vertical axis and three vertically oriented blades attached to a central hub by struts radially depending from the hub. The hub, struts and blades are preferably made from a composite material. In one embodiment the strut comprises an aerofoil shape. The blades are tilted from the vertical axis by a predetermined amount. The blade tips are further displaced along the rotational hub of the turbine by a predetermined amount. The blades are further twisted a predetermined amount about their centre-lines. The result is an aesthetically pleasing design that is much quieter than conventional vertical and horizontal axis turbines. The resulting turbine is also animal friendly resulting in fewer bird injuries.
