ABSTRACT The winding machine is of the kind having three support rolls arranged next to one another for winding a web divided lengthwise into reels, without a shaft, in two high-level winding beds, into which the web strips alternately run. To each front surface of the winding reels to be produced is associated a winding frame with a core guide having a grip. Above the middle support roll are located a transport device and insertion devices for transferring new paper cores into the appropriate winding bed. To ensure the correct positioning of the new paper cores in the appropriate winding bed, the paper cores are placed on the transport device in alignment in an unbroken sequence according to the width of the web strip. At the same time the core front surfaces are aligned with the separating plane of the web strips. Moreover, each winding frame is equipped with one of the insertion devices on the other side of the associated junction. Each paper core is, therefore, gripped at the ends by one insertion device respectively. After fully-wound winding reels have been ejected from the winding bed, the insertion devices transport the new paper cores over the appropriate winding bed, where the grips of the core guides enter respective core ends and lower each core into its respective winding bed.
