A winding mechanism for overhead doors such as garage doors utilizes an elongate winding spindle having helical grooves on its surface. Cables connected to the lower ends of the door are guided over pulleys to the winding device where they are further guided from opposite sides to be laid into the helical grooves as the spindle is rotated. The spindle is located on a wall adjacent the doorway and is mounted in bearings and rotated by an electric motor driving through a gear box and coupling.
