WINDOW COOLING AND PROTECTING APPARATUS AND METHOD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides an apparatus and method for protecting a window of a housing, the window transmitting high intensity radiation therethrough for use in industrial processes. Cooling liquid is supplied to a nozzle which produces a generally uniform sheet of cooling liquid which flows along the window and conducts heat from the window and restricts foreign matter ejected from the workpiece from contacting the window. If the window is plane, the nozzle can be an elongated gap in a wall of a plenum chamber extending along the window. A trough captures water passing along the window, and the water is recirculated back to the plenum chamber. Preferably, to reduce liquid splashes, suction is applied to the trough and any entrained air is removed from the water prior to filtering and cooling and returning the water to the nozzle. For an essentially continuous heating process of elongated workpieces, an elliptical sectioned chamber has a radiation source at one focus, and a target chamber at another focus, the workpiece passing centrally along the chamber. The target chamber is a transparent cylindrical tube, having a vortexing flow of liquid on an inside surface thereof to capture foreign matter ejected from the workpiece. The chamber has a vortex generator at one end, and a liquid exhaust means at an opposite end.
