An improved window frame assembly comprises at least one retainer means which acts between the frame and the window sash to assist the ability of the sash to resist wind-induced loadings and thereby increase the structural strength of the window frame assembly and to improve its ability to seal against water and/or air infiltration. The retainer means preferably is mounted to the sash and automatically engages and disengages the frame as the sash is moved between various positions.
