A window screen assembly has a window frame with a channel-shaped cross- section and a vertical front and a horizontal bottom. A window screen has a front face and a peripheral edge which is located within the window frame; and window screen retainers releasably secure the window screen in the window frame. The window screen retainers are blocks of resiliently deformable material compressed between and in engagement with the front face of the window screen and the front wall of the window frame so as to press against and thereby secure the window screen. The blocks each have a front face pressed against the front face of the screen and de-formed by the screen so that a portion of the block projects between the peripheral age of the screen and the bottom of the window frame, and a second face directed oppositely from the first face and pressed against the front wall of the frame.
