A rocket-powered spacecraft with a wing (17) having hinged portions (21, 22) which can be elevated about a hinge line (23). Tail booms (24, 25) extend rearwardly from the outer ends of the aft wing portions, and rudders (29) are mounted at the aft ends of the booms. Each tail boom supports a horizontal tail with an elevon (28) at its trailing edge. In normal flight, the wing has a normal airfoil shape and during re-entry, the aft wing portions are steeply elevated to provide stable high-drag descent. The high-drag descent reduces speed and thermal loading. After descent the wing is Returned to an unelevated position for gliding flight to a horizontal landing.
L'invention concerne un astronef propulsé par fusée comprenant une aile possédant des parties arrière articulées pouvant être levées autour d'une ligne d'articulation. Des poutres de queue s'étendent vers l'arrière à partir des extrémités extérieures des parties d'aile arrière, des gouvernes de direction étant montées au niveau des extrémités arrière de ces poutres. Chaque poutre de queue supporte une queue horizontale comportant un élevon au niveau de son bord de fuite. Pendant un vol normal, les parties arrière d'aile ne sont pas levées, l'aile présentant alors un profil aérodynamique normal. Lors d'une rentrée dans l'atmosphère, les parties arrière d'aile sont levées selon un plan abrupt en vue de l'obtention d'une position de forte traînée stable pour l'astronef et d'une réduction de vitesse avec une faible charge thermique et structurale. Après la rentrée, l'aile arrière revient dans une position non levée permettant un vol plané jusqu'à un atterrissage sur piste horizontale.
