ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A wire for use in a surgical instrument, comprising a substantially cylindrical body formed with a plurality of parallel flats forming chords substantially along its entire length with the cross-section of the body being generally cir- cular and defining arcuate and planar sections, one pair of the parallel flats defining the length of a spade cutting tip formed on one end of the wire body, and a pair of opposed flats de- fining the width of the spade cutting tip, the parallel flats on the wire body being positioned so that the diameter of a hole formed by drilling with the spade cutting tip while using the wire as a drill bit is about 92% of the length of a diameter of the wire drawn from opposing arcuate sections. The wire can be securely gripped in a chuck and the tip combines the advantages of spade tips and trocar tips.
