A method and apparatus for tracking the position of a mobile unit (300) in a mobile radio communication system using information from earth-orbiting satellites and information received from the infrastructure of the system, wherein the infrastructure consists of equipment (400) associated with transmitting and receiving voice or data traffic to and from the mobile phone (300). An initial position of the mobile unit (300) is calculated using measurements from earth-orbiting satellites. A positional difference between the initial position and a current position of the mobile station (300) is estimated using range measurements between the mobile unit (300) and the infrastructure (400). An accuracy value is next determined for the estimated positional measurement, and the accuracy value is compared to a threshold to determine whether the estimated positional measurement has an acceptable accuracy. If so the initial position of the mobile unit (300) is updated using the estimated positional measurement and the process is repeated using only range measurements between the mobile unit (300) and the infrastructure, otherwise a new initial position is determined from the earth-orbiting satellites and the process is repeated.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de suivre la position d'une unité mobile (300) dans un système de communication radio mobile, utilisant des informations provenant de satellites en orbite autour de la terre, et des informations provenant de l'infrastructure du système, cette infrastructure étant constituée d'un équipement (400) associé à des signaux vocaux émis et reçus ou un à trafic de données émises par le téléphone mobile (300) ou reçues par celui-ci. On calcule une position initiale de l'unité mobile (300) à l'aide de relevés effectués à partir des satellites en orbite autour de la terre. On estime une différence de position entre la position initiale et la position actuelle de la station mobile (300) à l'aide des mesures de distance entre l'unité mobile (300) et l'infrastructure (400). On détermine une valeur précise pour le relevé de position estimée, et on compare cette valeur à un seuil afin de déterminer si ledit relevé de position estimée possède une précision acceptable. Le cas échéant, on met la position initiale de l'unité mobile (300) à jour à l'aide du relevé de position estimée, et on répète ce procédé uniquement à l'aide de mesures de distance entre l'unité mobile (300) et l'infrastructure, autrement dit on détermine une nouvelle position initiale à partir des satellites en orbite autour de la terre, et on répète ledit procédé.
