A mud stripper of simple construction capable of being quickly applied to the open end of an upper pipe section in a drilling string of pipe section for stripping drilling mud from a wireline as it is withdrawn during repeated survey operations for detecting drilling characteristics, such as correctness of vertical during the drilling operation. The stripper includes a frame having means for ready clamping of the stripper to the open end of the upper most drill pipe in the string and simple removal on completion of each survey operation. Attached to an upper portion of the frame is a stripper head containing a wireline wiping element, the stripper head and wiping element permitting lateral insertion of the wireline into an operative wiping position prior to the wireline being drawn lengthwise therethrough.
