A wood panel assembly having an enhanced bending strength while reducing the waste of wood feedstock, and comprising outer layers and a central layer. The central layer includes a plurality of wood pieces of substantially equal height disposed in a plane, and having their fibers cut perpendicular to grain so that the fibers run generally parallel to the height of the wood pieces. These wood pieces are sandwiched between a first and second outer layers.
