TITLE WORD LENGTH CONVERTER ABSTRACT A bidirectional word length converter for use in transferring data between a first data process- in unit and second data processing unit each using a word format of a different length. The converter includes a buffer connected between the first and second units and a converter control. The converter control is adapted to accept a plurality of mode sig- nels from the first unit to control the transfer of data in a first length word format from the first unit to the second unit in a second length word for- mat. The converter control is further adapted to accept an alternative plurality of mode signals to transfer data from the second unit to the first unit in a similar manner.
