ABSTRACT A WORKPIECE CLAMPING DEVICE Clamping apparatus for holding a workpiece such as a log (25) comprises a cruciform support frame (12, 13) of legs (14, 15, 17, 18) the upper limbs of which define upwardly open V-shape volumes for receiving a log (25). Arcuately curved clamp arms (28) are pivotally connected to respective legs (17b, 18a) and spring biased to a closure position by springs (37) joined by chains (35) to a rigid connector link (33) pivoted to the clamp arm (28) by a pivot (27) projecting onto the opposite side of the clamp arm (28) from the pivotal connection (26) by which it is connected to the leg frame allowing it to be moved to an over-centre cocked position in which a curved tall portion (29) projects into the V-shape volume to act as a trigger initiating closure of the clamp arm when a log is placed in position. In other embodiments a flat working surface replaces the diverging support arms.
