WOUND-WIRE CASING PROCESS AND MACHINE ABSTRACT A process for manufacturing continuous casing in substantially unlimited lengths involves the mounting and centering of a coil of casing wire stock, for the rotation thereof about the main axis of the casing product. The rotating wire stock is drawn off from the coil, over a series of self-aligning guide pulleys, in an outward, constantly varying halical path, and directed inwardly to an adjustable coil-forming mechanism which deforms the stock into a continuous succession of non-rotating, axially advancing close turns of uniform diameter, to form an endless guide casing or conduit. The casing or conduit may be formed about a tubular liner, such as a plastic tube. If formed with its turns in abutting relation the casing is effectively axially incompressible, for uses such as emergency brake cable casing. Control of the coil forming mechanism to impart a predetermined prestress to the wire stock as it is curved into its turns can increase the residual compressive force exerted between adjacent coils, thereby stiffening the casing, to resist longitudinal bending deflection thereof under the influence of self-weight or lateral bending moment loads. By providing continuous lengths of 1000 feet (300 meters, approx) and greater, subsequent operations thereon can also be made substantially continuous, with marked cost savings and economics. The casing producing machine is small and compact, with a self-contained stock magazine to receive and center a coil of casing wire, and provides as product output an axially advancing, substantially non-rotating casing.
