The X-ray filters and compensating filters of the present invention have erbium oxide distributed evenly in a flexible matrix such as rubber or urethane and formed for specific attenuation of discrete areas of a patient's body when the filters are selectively and adjustably mounted in front of an X-ray machine collimator tube. The filters may be mounted so as to overlap in partially or totalling overlapping layers to provide varying degrees of X-ray penetration attenuation, wherein areas of attenuation by thicker collective compensating filter thicknesses attenuate a greater amount in areas of the patient so requiring such filtering.
