There is provided a manipulator including a first rail unit defining the X axis of a cartesian coordinate system and a second rail unit mounted to said first rail unit for movement along the X axis. The second rail unit defines the Y axis of a Cartesian coordinate system. An X axis drive unit is connected to said second rail unit for effecting movement thereof in the X direction. A Y axis travel unit is mounted on said second rail unit and includes a Y axis drive unit for effecting movement of the Y axis travel unit in the Y direction. A Z axis support unit is mounted to said Y axis travel unit and is adapted to carry a working tool. The second rail unit includes elongated rigid support beams carrying spaced apart parallel rails, said rails being supported by and extending along upper portions of said beams. The Y axis travel unit includes a yoke which is suspended from said beam-supported rails with said Z axis support unit being rigidly connected to and depending downwardly from said yoke for movement therewith.
