ABSTRACT Xanthates of the formula Image (I) wherein R1 is adamantyl, norbornyl, tricyclodecyl, benzyl, straight or branched substituted or unsubstituted C3-C20-alkyl, or C3-C20-cycloalkyl, furyl, pyridyl or quinuclidinyl; and R2 is a mono or polyvalent metal atom, or a straight or branched substituted or unsubstituted C1-C6-alkyl group, are prepared by reacting an alcoholate R1-O-Me where R1 is as above described and Me is an alkali metal atom, with carbon disulfide or by reacting an alcohol R1-OH with carbon disulfide in the presence of a strong alkali. The xanthates have been found to have anti- microbial and antiviral activity as well as activity influencing cell growth.
