A process for isomerizing a non-equilibrium xylene feed mixture is disclosed. The izomerization is conducted in the presence of hydrogen and at pressures in excess of 75 psig (517 kPa) over a ZSM-5 type catalyst containing about 0.1 to 5 wt.% of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of zinc, copper, silver and gallium. In another embodiment, the catalyst may further contain an oxide of at least one element selected from silicon, germanium and tin. The process produces a product containing about or above equilibrium quantities of para-xylene with low xylene loss.

La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant l'isomérisation d'un mélange de charge de xylène non équilibré. On procède à l'isomérisation en présence d'hydrogène et à des pressions supérieures à 75 psi manométriques (517 kPa) sur un catalyseur de type ZSM-5 contenant de 0,1 environ à 5 % pds environ d'au moins un métal choisi dans le groupe composé du zinc, du cuivre, de l'argent et du gallium. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, le catalyseur peut en outre contenir un oxyde d'au moins un élément choisi entre le silicium, le germanium et l'étain. Le procédé de la présente invention permet d'obtenir un produit contenant des quantités avoisinantes ou supérieures aux quantités d'équilibre de para-xylène avec de faibles pertes de xylène.
