The invention relates to substantially purified .gamma.-glutamyltranspeptidase (.gamma.-GTP) having the following characteristics: - a molecular weight of 23,000 to 40,000 Dalton - a isoelectric point at a pH between 5.0 and 6.5, - a pH optimum of 6.5 to 10 with L-.gamma.-glutamylparanitroanilide as substrate - a K m of 9 to 36 µM at pH 8, and - the ability to hydrolyze glutaryl- or adipinyl-monoamino compounds - obtainable by fermentation of bacteria of one or more of the genus Pseudomonas, Proteus, Arthrobacter and Bacillus.
