A yard crane of the rugged and economical type having an elongated boom which does not rotate with respect to the frame. The boom has a pulley end portion which is slidably and hydraulically positioned within a pivot end portion of the boom. Two upright pillar/tracks laterally positioned from each other on a front portion of the crane hold a slidable hydraulically lifted channel frame there between. A central portion of the pivot end of the boom is pivotally connected to a top portion of the sliding frame and a rear portion of the pivot end of the boom is pivotally connected to a stationary member carried by the frame behind the pillar/tracks. An operator carried by a central portion of the crane is able to drive the crane, steering it with the rear wheels, to front face a load to be lifted, hook onto it, and then carry that load to where it can be repositioned for unloading.
