ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A yarn is provided which exhibits high tenacity com- prised of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer fibers. Such yarn is produced by applying thereto a spin finish comprised of a thermally stable ester of a polyhydric alcohol and at least one saturated monobasic fatty acid having from 7 to 22 carbon atoms and subsequently thermally treating the same to increase the tenacity of the yarn by at least about 50 percent to at least about 12 grams/denier. The yarn can advantageously be formed into a tire cord without substantial loss of tenacity while retaining the desirable ability to adhere well to rubber. Particularly preferred surface finishes comprise pentaerythritol tetraisostearate and pentaerythritol tetrapelargonate. -1-
