-1- ABSTRACT Zeolite beta, useful as a hydrocarbon conversion catalyst, is synthesized by preparing a reaction mixture containing sources of alkali metal (M) oxide, an oxide of aluminum, a tetraethylammonium (R) compound, an oxide of silicon and water and having a composition, in terms of mole ratios, within the following ranges: SiO2/Al2O3 20 - 1000 H2O/SiO2 5 - 200 OH-/SiO2 0.10 - 2.0 M/SiO2 0.01 - 1.0 R/SiO2 0.10 - 2.0, maintaining the mixture at a temperature of 90°C to 200°C for from 24 hours to 7 days to crystallize the zeolite Beta, and terminating crystallization when the zeolite Beta product is from 30% to 90% crystalline.
