Abstract The invention relates to a procatalyst composition of a catalyst system intended for the polymerization of olefins consisting of magnesium halide particles, to the surface of which has been attached a titanium compound and optionally an electron donor. Moreover, the invention relates to a method for the preparation of the procatalyst composition of this kind and its use. A draw- back in the procatalyst compositions according to the prior art is the disadvantageous morphology of the components, the small amount of the so-called active centers and the sensitivity of the titanium compounds to impurities. These problems have been over- come in the present invention by forming substantially amorphous and spherical magnesium particles, which have been activated with a titanium compound like titanium alcoxide. The magnesium partic- les are prepared by spray-crystallization of the mixture of mag- nesium halide and alcohol and optionally a donor, whereby the produced complex particles after the treatment with an organome- tallic compound are easily and efficiently activated by tita- nium alcoxide which is more durable to impurities.
